Description This piece of musical theater marked the first collaboration between Robert Wilson and American rock musician and writer Lou Reed. Billed as the third part of a pop-opera trilogy that Wilson created for the Thalia Theater (the earlier two pieces being The Black Rider and Alice) it took for its subject matter ''The Time Machine'' by H. G. Wells. Composed in 30 brief scenes, and performed mostly in German (the songs were sung in English) the opera tells the tale of two lovers and their pursuit across history of a time-traveling doctor. With a text by award-winning American author Darryl Pinckney (who had previously collaborated with Wilson on The Forest and Orlando), and music/lyrics by Reed, this work premiered at Thalia Theater, Hamburg, June 12, 1996, and was later presented in the 1997 Next Wave Festival the following year.
