Founded in 1988, 651 ARTS took its name from Fulton Street address of the BAM Majestic Theater (now the BAM Harvey Theater), where it was originally headquartered. Committed to developing, producing, and presenting contemporary African-American arts programming in theater, dance, humanities, and music, it was established to provide programs and services that connect meaningfully with Brooklyn's cultural communities.
