Country of Origin United States
Description A private program organized for members of Russia’s Bolshoi Ballet, who were in New York on their historic 1966 American tour, A Demonstration Program of Contemporary American Dance was intended to foster cross-cultural dialogue through the Iron Curtain. The choreographers selected to represent contemporary American dance were Merce Cunningham, James Waring, Anna Sokolow, and Paul Taylor. An historic event, the program is further significant in that it featured many young dancers who later rose to prominence in the New York dance scene, including: Valda Setterfield and David Gordon (both dancing for James Waring); Martha Clarke and Jeff Duncan (dancing for Anna Sokolow); and Dan Wagoner and Carolyn Adams (who danced for Paul Taylor). The production was stage managed by a 23-year-old Beverly Emmons, who later became one of New York’s go-to lighting designers for dance, theater and opera.
