Brooklyn Reads: Poetry Performance

June 8, 2004

Production Language English
Country of Origin United States
Description BAM Education & Humanities is pleased to present this spirited performance by spoken word artists and a DJ to augment the Brooklyn Reads poetry residencies. Brooklyn Reads includes both classrooms of students as well as their parents. It involves students in reading poetry and creating and performing their own poetry. This performance will highlight some of today's most dynamic spoken word artists.

We provided both the students and their families with copies of the poetry anthology Poetry 180, a collection of short poems by some of the most exciting poets working today. It was put together specifically for high school students by Billy Collins, the former Poet Laureate of the United States, now Poet Laureate of New York State. Collins was motivated to publish this book because he felt that "high school...all too often...is the place where poetry goes to die," and he wanted to inspire a 180 degree turnaround in students' attitudes toward poetry.
