Country of Origin United States
Description Conductor Laureate Lukas Foss, joined by some outstanding musical friends, kicks off the season leading a program rich in American classics. He'll conduct masterworks by composer friends Copland (Brooklyn's own) and Stravinsky. Cellist Fred Sherry, a favorite of New York audiences, solos in music by Bernstein, and the exciting young Israeli trumpeter Sergei Nakarakov is spotlighted in a work by Morton Gould. In honor of Maestro Foss's 70th birhtday, the concert will include his much beloved Baroque Variations, in which familiar melodies of Bach, Scarlatti, and Handel are filtered through Maestro Foss's 20th century lens -- producing a true embrace of works from the past as music of our time.
