Description Still/Here was hailed by the New York Times as “a major and often startling mixed-media piece” after its New York premiere at the 1994 Next Wave Festival. In preparation for the piece, director and choreographer Bill T. Jones spent nearly two years leading what he called “Survival Workshops” for people with life-threatening diseases. Working with an impressive roster of collaborators (including rock god Vernon Reid and the folk legend Odetta), Jones constructed a highly formal dance vocabulary that incorporated workshop participants’ personal stories of experience and pain, an aesthetic juxtaposition which is both a paradox and a signature of Jones’s choreography.
