Description Four years after presenting Rameau’s Castor et Pollux, Les Arts Florissants returned with a performance of his breakthrough opera, Hippolyte et Aricie, which first premiered at the Académie Royale de Musique in 1733. Upon its premiere, the opera created much controversy. Many critics and audience members saw Rameau’s musical dynamism as an affront to the relatively subdued aesthetics of Lully’s tragédie lyrique, the abiding genre of French opera in the early 18th century.
