Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra: From Gospel to Gershwin

November 3 – 5, 1995

Production Language English
Country of Origin United States
Description Porgy and Bess has become so ingrained in our musical culture that we never stop to think about the contradiction of a black opera by a white composer. This and other issues will be explored during a weekend examining the course of African American music after World War I, and presenting the famous Morgan State University Choir in roof-raising Gershwin, spirituals, and gospel songs. A Sunday afternoon "interplay" features pianist Steven Mayer recreating the dazzling improvisations of Art Tatum and Fats Waller. Legendary jazz authority and conductor Gunther Schuller presides.
