Doppler Incident

November 6 – 9, 1997

Alternate Title Artists in Action: BAM Visual Arts Initiative
Production Language English
Country of Origin United States
Description "Doppler Effect: With any wave-type motion, the frequency—the pitch of a sound or the color of a light—is determined by the rate at which the wave passes the observer. Sound approaches as a high-pitched note and swiftly falls to a much lower pitch, passing through the true pitch at the point where source and observer are closest together. The conceptual center of Doppler Incident is anchored at this point of true pitch.

The performance begins in a darkened theater with a large curtain, on wheels, slowly approaching the audience from the farthest point back. As it closes in, a projected image comes into focus. It is a violent fight. A knife is involved. The video seems to document real events. At the point where it gets most intense, a voice, over the public address system, says, "I think you should re-cut it." What appears to be a verity, is seen to be only one version among many." —Excerpts from Mr. Marshall’s proposal
