Alternate Title BAM French Theater: In the Loneliness of the Cottonfields
Production Language French
Country of Origin France
Description Two men meet on a deserted city street at night. One, the Dealer, may be selling something he won't name; the other, the Client, may have an appetite he can't confess. Patrice Chéreau, an extraordinary artist who is at home in film, opera, and theater, directs and stars in a production of In the Loneliness of the Cottonfields, a powerful two-character play by the late French Playwright Bernard-Marie Koltès. Chéreau has also been widely recognized for his memorable production of The Ring at Bayreauth (1976-80), and for his direction of the film Queen Margot (1994), which won a Cannes Jury Prize.
Describing the characters after the 1987 premiere of the play, Chéreau said: "You've seen them at one time or another; perahps they didn't see you, but they were there, in flesh and blood, on the corner of Boulevard de Clichy and Rue des Martyrs, between Avenue A and East 4th Street. Only, when you've crossed their path, you do what I do: speed up and make a quick detour, out of fear that they won't let you by, because from moment to moment they may be friendly or threatening, and they have a mind to get something from you."
