Description Britain's celebrated Cheek by Jowl, an Olivier Award-winning company known for fresh interpretations of European classics, brings its distinctive performance style to Shakespeare's wondrous mix of fantasy and reality, Cymbeline. Abductions, beheadings, banished lovers, magic potions, and improbable plot twists abound in this labyrinthine, ultimately redemptive tale of love nearly lost.
Cymbeline, King of Britain, wants his daughter to marry the boorish Cloten, but the defiant Imogen has already wed the curiously named commoner, Posthumus Leonatus. Beside himself with rage, the King banishes Posthumus, who flees to Rome. Once there, he boasts to the unscrupulous Iachimo of his wife's fidelity. Iachimo wagers he can seduce Imogen (he can't, of course, as her virtue is beyond reproach). But he manages to fake it, unleashing a torrent of near-preposterous events that take the action all over the European map. True to form, director Declan Donnellan and designer Nick Ormerod infuse the work with an ideal blend of levity, grace, and imagination.
