Description A special program in 2005’s Next Wave Festival was the world premiere of Philip Glass’s Symphony No. 8, along with a presentation of Symphony No. 6 (Plutonium Ode). Both were performed by the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, conducted by Dennis Russell Davies. Glass stated that while composing Symphony No. 8 he thought of the orchestra “as a collection of virtuoso instruments as you would find in a concerto formation.” Symphony No. 6 was based on Allen Ginsberg’s 1979 poem, “Plutonium Ode.” Glass had previously worked with Ginsberg on his 1991 opera Hydrogen Jukebox, and he composed Symphony No. 6 in the years following the poet’s death.
