We Set Out Early…Visibility Was Poor

October 6 – 11, 1998

Country of Origin United States
Description We Set Out Early…Visibility Was Poor was one of the first wordless pieces in Bill T. Jones’s mature career. Following 1994’s Still/Here, which used the stories of people with terminal diseases to examine issues of race, class and sexuality, We Set Out Early received its American debut in the 1998 Next Wave Festival. Jones described his intent with the piece thus: “I make interesting movement and give it to a diverse, committed community of dancers; the viewer will do the rest. I tried to make something that's repeatable, an event for contemplation, to be looked at as I would look at my favorite art form, which is sculpture.”
