Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn and the Denishawn Dancers

Country of Origin United States
Description March 18, 1925. I got up at 8:30 in spite of having not got to sleep until nearly 3:00 a.m. and spent the morning at the Denishawn School, dictating mail, having business sessions with Louise and Mr. Jackson, Miss Kelly, with Katharine Edson, and after lunch continued on school business until 4:00 p.m. when Ruth joined me and there was a big tea for all Denishawn students past and present that were in town. Then we went over to Brooklyn and gave our evening performances at the Brooklyn Academy, which I have always felt to be one of the perfect stages and auditoriums in this country. Not a full house, but an enthusiastic one. Rose O'Neill came back stage and also Mr. and Mrs. Burton Holmes. When we were in North Africa together, Burton had bet me on one occasion when we were looking at some native dancers that I could not make any theatrical use of the material--and I had bet him that I could and would. I had forgotten the whole thing, but that night in Brooklyn, Burton put $5.00 in my hand and said, "Ted, you win--I definitely recognized the dance we saw in Tunisia in your Vision of the Aissoua tonight. And while you have made it definitely more attractive, which the original certainly was not---yet I must be honest and admit that you did make use of the material--and damned good use, too." We dashed back to New York and picked up our baggage, already packed, at the Astor, and on to Grand Central and left on a sleeper to Geneva, N.Y.
