Conjured by circus-theater, wunderkind James Thiérrée, this is nouveau cirque at its most engaging and fantastic. Marvelous physical theatrics -- acrobatics, contortion, capoeira tumbling, juggling, dancing, and sheer magic -- explode onstage within a raggedy realm of flea-market furniture, crumpled curtains, and other quixotic junk.
An extraordinarily gifted and charming performer, Thiérrée appears to defy gravity and other confining laws of nature. His entrance alone is worth the price of admission. Piloting a bizarre contraption made of ladders, rakes, and a vicious-looking scythe, Thiérrée and Bright Abyss's other five performers battle billowing white cloth waves. Where this storm will take us is anybody's guess.
