Description Grades 3-12. In AfricanDanceBeat and AfricanMusicBeat, students learn about the history, geography and culture of Africa and the African Diaspora through dance and music. Led by BAM teaching artists, the programs emphasize cultural connections, literacy in dance and music, and art with a focus on Afro-Cuban culture. Students participating in the program will attend a performance of El Ballet Folklórico Cutumba on May 25 or 26.
AfricanMusicBeat: Drumming and singing envliven the classroom as students learn traditional Afro-Cuban songs and perform African-inspired rhythms on indigenous and homemade instruments.
AfricanDanceBeat: Students learn Afro-Cuban movememt techniques and rhythmic expression, accompanied by live percussion.
Teachers are strongly urged to attend a Professional Development workshop on African music and dance at BAM to strengthen the effectiveness of the residency on Thursday, March 3, 4:30-6:30 pm.
