Description Mahagonny Songspiel (Das Kleine Mahagonny): Music by Kurt Weill, Text by Bertolt Brecht, English Translation by Timothy S. Mayer
Conversations with Fear and Hope after Death: Excerpts from six cantatas (Nos. 20, 33, 60, 76 127,139) "The Christmas Oratorio" and "Orgelbüchlein" by J.S. Bach.
Lust, greed and decadence spill forth from Weill's chamber opera "Little Mahagonny," the precursor to his three-act opera "The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny." Then following the unsavory with the spiritual, director Peter Sellars builds on the intense faith expressed in the Bach cantatas and the "Christmas Oratorio" to resolve Brecht's themes of murder and judgement with redemption and rebirth.
