November 8, 2001

Alternate Title Generation BAM / KaBAM Performance: Once Upon a Time in Chinese America: A Martial Arts Ballet and Music-Theater Epic
Production Language English
Country of Origin United States
Description 6th - 9th grades. As the international success of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon showed us, there is as much creativity in the martial arts as there is physical prowess. Once Upon a Time in Chinese America imaginitively reenacts a seventeenth-century fable in which Gar Man Jang, in alliance with the Manchu imperial forces, sacks the Shaolin Temple and unleashes an exciting secret. A beautifully choreographed martial arts battle explodes at the climax of the timeless myth. Composer, bandleader, writer and jazz saxophonist Fred Ho has created this New York premiere with a young, vibrant cast and live musicians.
