Alternate Title Generation BAM Performance: The Island
Production Language English
Country of Origin South Africa
Description A Generation BAM Performance for High School Students. Grades 9th - 12th grade. In 1973, playwright Athol Fugard with actors John Kani and Winston Ntshona wrote this play about the notorious prison on Robben Island in South Africa. Although banned by the apartheid government after two performances, the play toured internationally, including a Broadway run. The characters rehearse for a prison performance of Antigone, providing analogies to The Island's modern story of political oppression. This revival, with the original actors in their Tony Award-winning roles, was initiated as a special performance for Nelson Mandela, a former inmate at Robben Island.
