School-Time Performance: Alladeen

December 5, 2003

Alternate Title Generation BAM Performance: Alladeen
Production Language English
Country of Origin United States, England, United Kingdom
Description Grades 8-12. Alladeen transforms the ancient story of Aladdin and his magic lamp into a cautionary tale with a dazzling theatrical display that fuses electronic music with unique sets and cutting edge video techniques.

Shifting from the bustling streets of New York, to a telemarketing call center in India, to a Karaoke bar in London, Alladeen addresses issues of personal and cultural identity in a consumer-driven age of high-tech communication.

Personal transformation is played out in the surreal world of an Indian call center where young, well-educated Indian telemarketers expunge their ethnic identity and transform themselves into "Americans," adopting the flattest of accents and absorbing all manner of of American pop culture, so that they do not seem so "foreign" when they speak to customers in the USA.

Alladeen is a collaboration between the New York-based ensemble The Builders Association (creators of the Obie-winning Jet Lag) and Motiroti, the London-based masterminds behind a central section of Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee parade.
