Adapted from Kate DiCamillo's Newbery Honor book, Because of Winn-Dixie is the story of Opal, a ten-year-old girl, abandoned by her mother, who lives in a lonely little town with her preoccupied father, Preacher. Life changes for the forsaken Opal when she adopts a stray dog that she names for the local supermarket where she first saw it. Together the young girl and her four-legged companion encounter new friends, meet the town’s eccentric characters—including a mysterious recluse (Cicely Tyson)—and re-establish a warm bond between Opal and her father. This delightful film illustrates the importance of community, family, friendship, and belief in yourself.
