The Peter Zummo Orchestras/Elliott Sharp and Carbon

November 13 – 14, 1987

Alternate Title The Peter Zummo Orchestras / Elliott Sharp and Carbon
Country of Origin United States
Description THE PETER ZUMMO ORCHESTRAS: As a composer and trombonist, Peter Zummo employs a deceptively casual approach to his music, using haunting repeated phrases and gentle imporvisation to create a new form of minimalism. The results are disarmingly moving and beautiful. A former member of both Love of Life Orchestra and The Lounge Lizards, and winner of a 1986 "Bessie" Award for his score for Trisha Brown's Lateral Pass, Zummo will present several works at BAM, including the world premiere of a work for nine-piece ensemble made up of his core group: Mustafa Ahmed, Guy Klucevsek, Arthur Russell, Bill Ruyle, and himself, plus four additional musicians.

ELLIOTT SHARP AND CARBON: One of the East Village's reigning musical visionaries Elliott Sharp imbues his music with equal shares of raw energy and musical intelligence. A virtuoso multi-instrumentalist, Sharp will lead his ensemble Carbon-- expanded to 13 pieces -- in the world premiere of his new work, Larynx. The ensemble will include four of downtown New York's most accomplished percussionists: Robert Previte, David Linton, Charles K. Noyes, and Sam Bennett, Brass and Slab players David Fulton and Jim Staley, as well as the Soldier String Quartet. With influences ranging from Hendrix to Stockhausen, from chants of Tibetan monks to brass bands of New Orleans, Sharp's compositions envelope the listener with overwhelming primitive power.
