Description: Black women have always been at the forefront of political revolution and community building. Shirley Chilsom & Joan Maynard, both Brooklyn natives, are two of the incredible community leaders who imagined new possibilities for themselves and their communities. Albeit on different paths––Chilsolm was the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress and first Black woman candidate to run for a major-party nomination for U.S. President, while Dr. Maynard was a founding member, and eventually president and Executive Director of the Society for the Preservation of Weeksville & Bedford-Stuyvesant History––both were fierce advocates. Both women were also so much more than their accomplishments.
