BAM Affiliation John Jasperse’s choreography first appeared on the BAM stage in a Spring 2000 appearance by Baryshnikov’s White Oak Dance Project, in an evening of works by four choreographers that also included Trisha Brown, Mark Morris, and Yvonne Rainer. He returned the next year with a full-length work performed by his own company, described as not a dance company in the traditional sense, but a production structure supporting artistic projects initiated and driven by Jasperse, in collaboration with independent artists working in a variety of media. Jasperse and his company have presented evening-length works in four previous Next Wave Festivals. In his early career, after graduating from Sarah Lawrence College in 1985, he choreographed numerous shorter works, and also danced with several choreographers in New York City as well as with Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker in Belgium. His award-winning choreography has been performed widely internationally, including commissioned works for White Oak Project, Batsheva Dance Company, and Lyon Opera Ballet.
