651 ARTS

BAM Affiliation in 1988, Mikki Shepard and Leonard Goines formed 651 (later 651 ARTS), a not-for-profit organization focused on establishing relationships with African-American and other minority artists, both local and international. The 651/Kings Majestic Corporation was launched in the following year as an independent multicultural arts program then associated with BAM, presenting artists from all performing disciplines like Billy Eckstine, Betty Carter, Tito Puente, Ruth Brown, Donald Byrd, and Anna Deavere Smith. One of its transformative presentations, in 1992, was the 100 Years of Jazz and Blues festival, which supplemented its presentations with symposia, master classes, and visual arts exhibitions.
