On February 25-26th, 2020, archivists Zakiya Collier, Megan Williams, and Camille Lawrence led attendees through an archival tour through the lens of Toni Morrison. Although Toni Morrison never made an appearance at BAM, her work as an editor at Random House and Nobel Prize winner in literature is deeply connected to the Black artists, lecturers, and performers who graced BAM’s stages. In continuing the celebration of Black History Month and Women’s History month, this digital collection pulls references from "The Black Book," an encyclopedic survey of the Black experience in America from 1619 through the 1940s, edited by Toni Morrison while at Random House. From Frederick Douglas Lectures to the Alvin Ailey Dance Company, Toni’s selections reflect some of the most historical and revolutionary experiences at BAM.
