Satyagraha

November 6 – 15, 1981

Production Language Sanskrit
Country of Origin United States
Description One of the special highlights of the first Next Wave Series in 1981 was the Brooklyn Philharmonia presentation of Philip Glass’s now-classic opera Satyagraha. The second installment of Glass’s Portrait Trilogy—following Einstein on the Beach—Satyagraha is loosely based on the life of Mohandas K. Gandhi. The title refers to Gandhi’s concept of passive resistance, and the text—sung in Sanskrit—is culled from the Bhagavad Gita.
