Description Charles Simic, the fifteenth Poet Laureate of the United States (2007—2008), was born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1953 at the age of 15. He lives in New Hampshire where, until his retirement, he was a professor of American Literature and Creative Writing at the University of New Hampshire. A poet, essayist, and translator, he has been honored with the Wallace Stevens Award, a Pulitzer Prize, two PEN Awards for his work as a translator, and a MacArthur Fellowship.
