Description The artistry and diversity of music in the Islamic world reflected in the program Songs of the Sufi Brotherhoods provides the stimulus to explore many timely and evocative issues that relate to Islam, music, and cultural and religious identity. These artists represent three different corners of the Islamic world and their music ranges along the continuum of traditional virtuosity to contemporary fusions. The panel will consit of Hassan Hakmoun and Rashid Ahmed Din (Rizwan-Muazzam Qawwali), two of the artitsts featured in Songs of the Sufi Brotherhoods, and others. They will discuss topics such as music and spirituality, and the role of music in the Islamic world. Larry Blumenfield, editor-at-large for Jazzis, will moderate.
