Description The Brooklyn Academy of Music Department of Education and Humanities initiated this new literacy, social studie, and the arts project called Brooklyn Reads: From Page to Stage with the exploration of the play 12 Angry Men by Reginald Rose. This is a pilot project to develop a model for engaging students with the written word through reading, performing, research and writing, drawing on the perspective and resources of the performing arts. We are interested in making everyone a good reader, as Emerson expresses it above, through finding a myriad of strategies for reading and writing.
Students and their families in 17 classes in 4 Brooklyn schools have been reading the same play and developing a variety of activities based on what they have read.... Today the students are sharing some of their own playwriting explorations inspired by the themes of 12 Angry Men. They will be joined by professional actors who will read some of the students' writings.
