Chuck Davis Dance Company

February 24 – 27, 1977

Alternate Title Dance Africa 1977, DanceAfrica 1977
Country of Origin United States, Mali
Description For three days in late February, 1977, the Chuck Davis Dance Company took over the Lepercq space, transforming it into an African village. A note in the program read: “In essence, you are visitors to our village which is wherever we are. We welcome you with Dyembes (Drums) and Eparoro (Chant). Through the chant we ask that you not only enjoy your stay with us but form with us a comradeship that will remain a lasting association.” These three days have been acknowledged as the first iteration of what became known as DanceAfrica. The metaphorical village has expanded into a real community of African dance, which meets annually each spring at BAM.
