Merce Cunningham and Dance Company

January 20, 1954

Country of Origin United States
Description The first evening-length presentation of Merce Cunningham and Dance Company at BAM included an eclectic program of dances set to music for magnetic tape (composed by Christian Wolff), and a septet danced to four-handed piano (composed by Satie and performed by John Cage and David Tudor). The program closed with “Dime a Dance,” an important piece in the early Cunningham canon which was created at Black Mountain in August 1953 using chance operations. This evening also marked the final appearance of Paul Taylor as a member of the Cunningham company.
