Sounds of Protest: Jazz and Blues

April 5, 1992

Country of Origin United States
Description Part of the 100 Years of Jazz & Blues Festival
One way of dealing with the raw realities of life is to "tell it lke it is." This concert focuses on the jazz/blues music and poetry that have served as a vehicle for this type of social commentary from the West African griot to the urban blues woman.

The feminist brass and no-holds barred blues of Saffire - The Uppity Blues Women do time with the master of blues, poetry, and protest, Amiri Baraka; Brooklyn's own jazz-rap duo Get Set Effects (Mark and Scott Batson) and Archie Shepp, one of jazz's consistently effective message carriers.
