The Antigone of Sophokles

October 10 – 19, 1968

Alternate Title Antigone
Production Language English
Country of Origin United States
Description Based on Bertolt Brecht’s adaptation (translated into English by Judith Malina), the Living Theatre’s production of Antigone was set against the backdrop of escalating violence in Vietnam. As scholar Cindy Rosenthal stated, “Spectators were meant to see with new eyes the incendiary struggles taking place outside the theatre. Following Antigone's example, they were meant to take on—individually—the political responsibility and the challenge, and to take part in revolutionary actions.”
