Description Hailed as the first masterpiece of minimalism, the world premiere of Steve Reich’s Drumming was held at MoMA, Town Hall, and BAM in 1971. It was the first time Steve Reich and Musicians performed at BAM. Reich composed Drumming after a trip to Ghana in the late 1960s, when he studied African percussion under master drummer Gideon Alorwoyie. The piece was presented again in 1975, and again in 2001 as a dance performance (with live music) with the choreography of Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker.
