Description As the artistic force behind Israel’s Batsheva Dance Company, Ohad Naharin has molded the stellar troupe into an ideal vehicle for his intrepid and unreservedly sensual dances. Naharin returns to BAM with Mamootot, an urgently felt, hour-long piece for nine dancers. Designed for a very small audience seated around an informal performance space, it has no discernible front or back. Every movement, indeed every angle, reveals a new perspective on Naharin’s sharply etched rhythms and propulsive phrasing. Within the studio of the Mark Morris Dance Center, the dancers can’t help but strike up an intimate correspondence with the audience. No longer insulated by the fourth wall, the performers are scarily and wonderfully close, their dancing at once more approachable and even more transcendent.
