Description In the past 20 years, Jonathan Miller has brought his keen revisionist's eye to one repertory classic after another - from Rigoletto to The Rake's Progress - earning a reputation as one of the opera world's most original thinkers. In 1997, Miller brought his vision of the great Bach sacred work St. Matthew Passion to BAM. Miller's stripped-down, casual-dress production startled audiences with its dramatic power. Recognizing that the drama of this magnificent oratorio is often at odds with the customary stand and-sing presentation, the director put his personal stamp on Bach's masterpiece with an informal, in-the-round staging that delighted BAM audiences during five sold-out performances. Now, in a return engagement with a fresh cast of young singers and musicians, conducted by Paul Goodwin, Miller again peels away the pious, passive performance traditions of this magnificent work, allowing us to confront the words behind the music and come face to face with the passion and humanity at the heart of this Passion.
