Alternate Title Parcours: Lucinda Childs Dance Company, 25th Anniversary Season
Premiere New York Premiere
Country of Origin United States
Description Twenty-five years ago, Lucinda Childs Dance Company debuted at the Whitney Museum, a fitting setting for a choreographer who turned the elemental art of walking into an art. A minimalist by nature, Childs's elegantly spare movement patterns accelerate and build, one upon the other, creating a cumulative effect both tensile and lush. In celebration of her company's Silver Anniversary, Childs has created Parcours, a 75-minute site-specific program of new and reconstructed works. Among the dances are the aesthetically defining Radial Courses (1976); Concerto (1993), with music by Henryk Górecki; Commencement, a 1995 solo Childs performs to a score by Zygmunt Krauze; From the White Edge of Phyrgia (1995), to music by Stephen Monatague; from earlier this year, Variété de Variété, to a score by Mauricio Kagel; and Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collector, set to a string quartet by Terry Riley.
An original member of the precedent-breaking Judson Dance Theater and an inveterate collaborator (she choreographed the groundbreaking 1984 reconstruction of the Glass / Wilson opera Einstein on the Beach), Childs has most recently been creating works for other dance companies as well as for opera and theater. Where she previously used decor to define the environments in which her dances take place, with Parcours the theater space itself -- the wonderfully mutable Harvey Theater -- plays an integral and highly significant role.
