Description After launching her career in the commercial world—on MTV’s Making the Band and on Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Bad Boy Records in girl group Danity Kane and electropop duo Dirty Money—singer, songwriter, actress, and animator Dawn Richard began her career as an independent solo artist. In April 2021, she released her sixth album Second Line to critical acclaim through Merge Records, best known for indie-rock acts including Neutral Milk Hotel and Arcade Fire. The Björk-inspired album, titled for the music and dance processional tradition in Richard’s home city of New Orleans, where revelers gather to celebrate, merges R&B, electronic and house music, Afrofuturism, and bounce. On the album’s opening track, “King Creole (Intro),” Richard brings her artistic alter ego to life by declaring: "I am the genre."
