Description Fresh from a tour across America, Peter Brook’s International Centre for Theatre Research took residence in BAM’s Lepercq Space (which was newly renovated for Brook and his Centre) in September 1973. Over the course of six weeks Brook and about two dozen actors and musicians (among them a young Elizabeth Swados) held participatory demonstrations in the Lepercq that focused on group improvisation, often followed by a performance of The Conference of the Birds, a piece based on the 12th century Persian poem of the same title. In its six weeks in Brooklyn the Centre also taught a number of free workshops to children in neighborhoods throughout the borough, encouraging civic participation in the creation of an adventurous theatrical experience.
