Description Grades K-12. In-school dance or music residency with a BAM education teaching artist. Nine 45-minute workshops. The AfricanDanceBeat and AfricanMusicBeat programs emphasize cultural connections, literacy in dance and music, and art-making with a focus on DanceAfrica's visiting company and its country of origin. Led by BAM's teaching artists, students will have the exciting expereince of learning about Africa and the African Diaspora through dance and music. Students participating in the program will attend a performance by the Tatj Drama 'N' Dance ensemble from Ghana at BAM on May 20 or 21. AfricanDanceBeat and AfricanMusicBeat explore history, geography, and the culture of the visiting DanceAfrica company through the arts. In AfricanDanceBeat, students participate in African-based movement techniques and rhythmic expression. Live percussion accompaniment is provided for each workshop. In AfricanMusicBeat, the students learn to sing traditional African songs, and perform rhythms on homemade and indigenous instruments.
