The New School is pleased to present a series of conversations with some of the major artists participating in the tenth Next Wave Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Muisc. The challenging of traditional artistic boundaries is the defining characteristic of the performing arts in the recent years, and no institution in New York was more successful in catching this new wave as BAM, which in the early 1980s began presenting special events under the title "The Next Wave." These events were and are intended to promote the most farseeing and provocative of those artists who have a passion for experimentation and collaboration. For these artists, the distinctions between "high" and "low" or elite and popular culture are so many chains-that-must-be-broken for the sake of the arts.
