The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the American Library Association “for the most distinguished American children’s book published.” BAM presents the films based on the classic book Sounder and on the more recent novel Holes, both of which focus on young people who overcome difficult circumstances through courage and education. Both films illuminate historical and social issues. They also provide the opportunity for students to analyze the different ways that books and film can tell the same story, motivating students to read more while increasing their literacy skills.

The Morgans are a proud and loving family of African-American sharecroppers in Louisiana during the Depression. They face a crisis when the father is sent to a labor camp for stealing food needed to feed his family. The young son sets out to visit his father in a coming-of-age odyssey as he discovers the depths of racial and class prejudice and the importance of education. Through courage, hope, loyalty, and perseverance, the family finds the strength to overcome harsh realities. This highly acclaimed film won Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and for its lead actors, Paul Winfield and Cicely Tyson. Based on the 1970 Newbery Medal book by William H. Armstrong.
