Description Marking the BAM debut of the then four-year-old Mark Morris Dance Group, the 1984 Next Wave appearance of Morris and his ensemble set off fireworks across New York’s dance landscape. With a program including his already-classic “Gloria,” the New York premiere of his Indian-influenced “O Rangasayee,” and the world premiere of his fiery “Championship Wrestling after Roland Barthes,” dance critics across the city took note of an explosive new talent. As Joan Acocella put it in her book Mark Morris, the reviews suggested “Morris in the BAM concert had not just revived old modern dance forms; he had revived the old modern dance faith in originality—the idea that each generation will create dance anew, as new geniuses spring up, each with a wholly individual style.”
