Corroboree

October 24 – 27, 2001

Premiere New York Premiere
Country of Origin Australia
Description Australia’s leading contemporary Aboriginal dance company combines technically sophisticated street-wise choreography with intimate ceremonial and ritual traditions reaching back some 40,000 years. With their bodies at times coated in white ash, Indigenous dancers enact a series of elemental scenes in Corroboree, giving voice to the Aboriginal “dreamtime,” and responding to the impact of modern society on traditional life. Dances once conceived as ritualized obeisance to the gods now inform and enhance Bangarra's work about what it means to be an Indigenous Australian in the modern world.
