Description: BAM's annual DanceAfrica celebrates its "sweet sixteen" birthday May 23-30, 1993, with the largest gathering of African-American dance companies in the United States. Twenty companies representing more than 400 performers will be the featured highlight of the weeklong celebration. Since its inception in 1977, DanceAfrica has become a New York City tradition with its series of master dance classes, formal performances. and the ever-popular outdoor bazaar. The BAM offering has also been the inspiration for the City of Chicago to present their own "DanceAfrica" celebration under the artistic direction of Chuck Davis, founder of BAM's celebration.
