Asadata Dafora

BAM Affiliation Asadata Dafora performed African Drums and Modern Rhythms at BAM in 1946. Dafora, born in Sierra Leone, created work that incorporated West African performance with European styles and has had enormous influence on artists interrogating acculturation and performance in the African diaspora. He worked with Katherine Dunham, Pearl Primus, and Charles Moore who have all appeared at BAM. While Dafora himself never returned to BAM, his work has been presented here many times including a 1932 Asadata Dafora piece, Ostrich, performed by Charles Moore as part of the Dance Black America program in 1983.
