Description Billed as a “musical fable”, The Black Rider : The Casting of the Magic Bullets was a collaboration between Robert Wilson, American singer-songwriter Tom Waits, and iconic Beat novelist William S. Burroughs. This piece was adapted from the German folktale “Der Freischütz”, and tells the story of a clerk who, to win the hand of a hunter’s daughter, makes a deal with the devil for magic bullets that always hit their mark. One bullet, however, remains under the control of the devil, and strikes the protagonist’s beloved on the day of their wedding, driving him to madness. Wilson’s design for the production took visual influence from German Expressionist silent films, such as the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, as well as references to other themes in modern German history.
