Description The Screens was a complicated, five-hour extravaganza that is still well remembered in New York theatrical circles. Jose Quintero wanted to stage the mammoth undertaking of The Screens in the 1960s. But when Jean Genet heard a significant scene had been axed out of Quintero’s production of The Balcony, Genet refused to give Quintero rights to stage the production. Minos Volonakis, the Greek director and a good friend of Genet’s, oversaw the American premiere.
