Description One of Handel’s final oratorios, Theodora tells the story of the persecution of Christians under the Emperor Diocletian in the fourth century. When the piece premiered at Covent Garden in 1750, it was poorly received. Handel then made several hasty revisions to the score, some of them damaging to the piece’s artistic integrity. For Les Arts Florissants’ BAM performance, conductor William Christie employed a score which incorporated some of Handel’s useful revisions, while restoring some of the oratorio’s original content.
Performed in German with English subtitles.
